I've been taking speech therapy all my life. I've only been alive for 17 years, but I think I've had plenty of experience in therapy. But it was only a few days ago that I found out a pretty important piece of information.
Stuttering does not have a fool proof way to control it. The way I stutter is not the way you stutter. Some methods we both use to control it may overlap, but they can be really different. The therapists I had so far never even mentioned that to me. Sometimes I got really discouraged when I wasn't getting any results. I thought it was something wrong with me. I didn't know that maybe the technique I was using was just not the right one to use.
Sharing our techniques to control stuttering can be really helpful, but if you aren't getting results, don't worry! Just experiment and try something new! (I'm actually seeing a speech therapist that specializes with children, so I'm usually sitting in a waiting room with kids ten years younger than me. I feel a little stupid, but this therapist is really good so it's worth it)
